Five Dock Handball Club News
September 10th, 2011: Five Dock Handball Club got the fifth place in the NSW Handball competition after winning a thrilling match against Harbourside HC. The match was decided only over the last few minutes! Final score: Five Dock 42 x Harbourside 39 (click for more)
It was a thrilling match that was undecided until final whistle. Up to the 20th minute of the second half we saw both teams taking the lead but not being able to maintain. Just to give an idea of how close this match was, the two teams together managed to level the score 23 times over the 60 minutes.
From the 20th minute of the second half Five Dock HC managed to score 4 consecutive goals that gave FDHC the chance to administer this advantage to the end.
Of course FDHC knew that it would not be easy and the match got dramatic when Five Dock was punished with two consecutive exclusions leaving us with a disadvantage of two players during the last 2 minutes of the match. Despite having only 5 players on the court Tom managed to score and increase the FDHC advantage to 5 goals (42 x 37). During the last 90 seconds Harbourside scored twice and we've got to the final score that was: Five Dock HC 42 x Harbourside HC 39. (The official report shows 42 x 40 but an extra goal - the 36th one - was incorrectly added to Harbourside when Five Dock HC scored its 39th goal. Luckily this mistake did not affect the final result...)
The last "golden hand" trophy of the season goes to Tom. Scoring 17 times he was the top scorer of the match and a real problem to the official that had no space in the match report to properly record his goals! Check the Tom's report line below: (How could you fit 17 goals there????)
He was followed by Chris with 9 goals and Mauricio with 8. Both of them had a outstanding performance and they've also played very well together. Check in the Media Gallery an increadible pass from Chris to Mauricio that resulted in one of the best goals of the season for Five Dock HC.
Our goalkeeper Jono "Wall" Kriening had a suberb performance and was fundamental in this victory!
Louwis showed a great fitness level and defended very well - especially by blocking many fast breaks. The wings Tiago, Luis and Eduardo also had a good match playing well in defense. Eduardo managed to play injured when FDHC needed him during the second half and over the last 5 crucial minutes. Other key player in defense was Ricardo that really took control of the 9-meter area not allowing the opposite side to take advantage of that space.
Oliver played as wing and back and helped the team in attack by moving quickly the ball and creating spaces on the harbourside defence.
Since the season is over for FDHC we've decided to reveal what was our secret weapon throughtout the competition. Watch the video in the Media Gallery to discover our secret!
An important point to acknowledge in this match is that Five Dock rely a lot on the top players while Harbourside is a much more balanced team.
Key performance indexes for Five Dock:
Goals scored by the top 2 players: 62% Goals scored by the top 3 players: 81% Ratio 1st / 6th scorer (*): 17.0 Number of players scoring 4 or more goals: 3
(*) Ideally this index should be less than 1.0 and it represents how much the team depends on individual players.
Key performace indexes for Harbourside:
Goals scored by the top 2 players: 36% Goals scored by the top 3 players: 51% Ratio 1st / 6th scorer (*): 1.7 Number of players scoring 4 or more goals: 6
Those indicators are not a surprise for Five Dock HC since the main objective of the club was to bring new players to the NSW Handball and because of that we expected that we would have mixed performances on most matches. Currently Five Dock HC has 9 players that never played in NSW before and from those 4 never played handball before joining Five Dock.
So we are really happy with what we achieved this year and this 5th position corroborate that we are in the right direction!
Main facts for the FDHC 2011 season:
Five Dock got the 5th place in the 2011 NSW Competition We've finished the competition with an expressive victory over Harbourside after losing twice to them in the regular season. It clearly shows that we are evolving. Tom - dubbed as the "golden hand" trophy collector - was the best player of the season for Five Dock (and of the entire competition accordingly to FDHC supporters). He has donated his Jersey to the Club and it has been transferred to the FDHC museum in our Head Office at Tuscany Court. His Jersey will be included in an exhibition as soon as it stops stinking. The season started for FDHC in a Tennis court and some innovative members of the club invented a new sport called HandTennis that uses lots of handball fundaments. Please email the club if you want to learn more about this exciting sport. As we all know Ricardo started the season as coach, founder, player, official, referee and financial controller and throughout those 6 months he also took some new roles: club authorised driver, alternative sports / warm up coordinator, external relationships official and some other. Since he’s done an outstanding job on at least 27 of his 43 roles he got promoted and received a 17.8% salary increase. Louwis Venter got the most-improved award for the 2011 season. As a rugby player he started running with the ball and even grounded it inside the 6-meter area claiming 5 points. He also complained to the referees that a penalty goal should count 3 points instead of only 1. But this now is part of his past and I have already seen he complained in a Rugby match that a player took more than 3 steps! It is great that he finished the competition as one of the most reliable players for Five Dock. Well done Louwis! FDHC brought 9 new players to Handball in NSW.

September 3rd, 2011: Five Dock HC missed some key players and was defeated by Hills Heat. (click for more)
Five Dock HC started the match more concerned about saving our energy than playing our best. This made the very start of the match very easy for Hills Heat especially by succssefully executing fast breaks.
Hills created an advantage of 8 goals in the first 15 minutes of the match. At that point Five Dock increased the pace of the match and fought back reducing the difference in the score to 4 goals.
Without subs the team got tired quickly and could not keep up with the good performance and Hills Heat manage to increase their lead back to 7 goals.
During the second half Five Dock HC did not have the energy to repeat the good moments of the first half and Hills Heat consistently increased the difference. The final score was Hills Heat 47 x Five Dock HC 29.
Tom was the Five Dock top scorer with 10 goals and he was followed by Chris (6) and Ricardo (5). The top scorer of the match was Kenneth Toerlen with 15 goals.
Five Dock showed an improvement in defence by being more aggressive inside the 9-meter area and in attack by converting a higher percentage of the 6-meter shots. Despite we played without subs and some important players this match was great in order to prepare the team to the 5th place play off next week.
August 27th, 2011: Five Dock HC played well most of the match but a sequence of errors in attacking and defending from the 10th to the 20th minute of the first half gave Harbourside the victory by 8 goals in an epic 76-goal match. (click for more)
Five Dock HC started the match very well and quickly took the lead by 5 to 3 with goals of Mauricio(2), Ricardo and Tom(2).
Something happened and the so called "blackout" phase started... From the 10th to the 20th minute of the first half Harbourside could repeatedly score from the 6-meter line using well the pivot and fast breaks. During those 10 minutes Harbourside created an advantage of 8 goals that was maintained to the end of the match and defined the winner side. In 10 minutes FDHC went from leading the match to a huge disadvantage in the score… If we excluded those 10 minutes from the match (We wish we could...) the final score would be a draw at 32 goals.
The second half score was a tie at 20 goals for each team. It means that Five Dock HC improved the attack effectiveness by 35% while the defence was 10% better when compared to the first half. Considering those numbers it is fair to say that the attack worked as desired but the defence still didn't achieve the performance level that we really need.
Tom is back and as expected he got the "golden hand" trophy by being the match top scorer with 12 goals! He has already carved his name as the legendary FDHC "golden hand" collector!
He was followed by Ricardo with 8 goals and by Chris that had an excellent performance with 6 successful shots.
For Five Dock HC the points for improvements are:
Wings need to be more precise when shooting and creating opportunities. Not only to score but also the make the pivot and back players life easier. Too many mistakes while trying to block the pivot. Many times the Harbourside pivot received the ball without any defender close enough to make his shot a little bit more difficult. This happened in situations that we should not have allowed the pass to get to the opponent in the first place. On attack we are still forcing some passes especially to the pivot what gives the opposite team great fast break opportunities. Badly enough for us Harbourside took an enormous advantage from those opportunities.
Five Dock HC has two matches before the end of the season:The first one against Hills Heat and despite being difficult it would be really a great victory (maybe against the champions!). The very last match in the 2011 NSW competition for FDHC will be 5th place decider. This is now our main objective and we will make everything to get there!

August 20th, 2011: Five Dock HC played its best half so far but was defeated by Sydney Uni after not being able to keep the good performance on the second half. (click for more)
Five Dock HC achieved the level of performance that we are looking for on the first half of the match against Sydney Uni.
Sydney Uni is one of the top teams of the competition and during the first 30 minutes of the match Five Dock HC managed to keep the score very close with Five Dock or Sydney Uni leading by only one goal during most of the first half.
Ricardo played good match and was Five Dock HC top scored with 10 times followed by Chris with 3 goals. FDHC still missed many 6 meter shots that if we didn't we could have won the first half. Jono also had a great performance and saved many goals from the 6-meter and fast breaks.
Since all FDHC peaked during the first 30 minutes we really expected the team to slow down a bit on the second half. What we didn't realised it that we would almost stop completely. During the first 20 minutes of the second half we scored only twice and Sydney Uni managed to create an advantage of 17 goals.
While Sydney Uni finished the first half leading by 3 goals (15 x 12) they won the full match by 17 goals (36 x 19).

August 13th, 2011: Five Dock HC didn't start the match well and was defeated by Hills Blaze by 37 x 22. (click for more)
Hills Blaze started the match very well and created an advantage of 11 goals during the first half of the match.
Despite being many goals behind Five Dock improved during the second half leading the second half score for most of the time but since we were not able to lower the difference to less than 9 goals.
In the last 10 minutes of the match we saw Hills Blaze increase the difference to 15 goals and the final score was 37 x 22. A well-deserved victory since Hills Blaze was able to create a good advantage during the beginning of the game and to hold Five Dock HC during the second half.
Mauricio and Chris were the top scorers for Five Dock HC with 5 goals in total. Tim Anderson was the top scorer of the match with 9 goals.

July 30th, 2011: Christian Scheibel made his debut for Five Dock Handball Club in the victory over UTS by 35 x 28. (click for more)
UTS played the match from the start to the end with only 5 players and was defeated by Five Dock HC.
The best news for Five Dock Handball was the debut of Christian Scheibel. Chris has just signed with Five Dock and will play to the end of the competition. Although he had no chance to practice with the team before the match his performance was outstanding and he will certainly help FDHC on the remaining rounds. Chris started with the "right hand" and scored the first goal of the match and his first goal for Five Dock HC during the opening minute! Impressive start!
Five Dock HC performance was not the best. Again the team thought that the match would be really easy and did not keep the concentration level needed to show a good performance. This was corroborated by the situation where Five Dock got only 5 players as well (because of a 2-minute suspension and an injured player) and managed to even increase the advantage.
The start of the match was as expected when Five Dock led by 3 to 1 but after repeatedly failing to beat the goal keeper on 6-meter shots UTS could come back to lead by 7 to 5. Five Dock's response was immediate and after scoring 3 times regained the lead by 8 to 7.
After that Five Dock advantage oscillated between 2 to 5 goals during the last 15 minutes of the first half. The partial result for the first 30 minutes was: Five Dock HC 15 - UTS 13.
FFive Dock started well the second half increasing the difference to 5 goals and giving the impression of an easy second half. But that didn't last and the FDHC squad slowed down deeply to see UTS scoring 5 times and levelling the match up at 18-18.
Ricardo stepped up and gave Five Dock the lead by converting a 7-meter that was awarded to him after UTS defended inside the 6-meter area. Five Dock led the match from that point to the end maintaining an advantage of 5 goal most of the time and winning by a final score of 35 to 28.
On the negative side the FDHC defence was not active enough on some moments of the match allowing the UTS players to move freely inside the 9-meters area and some of the last match mistakes were repeated like losing the control of the ball in the attack and giving UTS the opportunity to score some fast breaks.
Ricardo was the top scorer of the match with 13 goals an and he got for the first time the "golden hand" trophy! He was followed by Mauricio (7), Luis (6) and Chris (5).

July 23rd, 2011: Five Dock Handball Club improved on defence and the success rate on 6-meter shots but lacked in fitness to be a real threat to Canberra. (click for more)
In this match Five Dock HC showed a significant improvement on the defence and the percentage of converted 6-meter shots. The focus on those skills over the last training sessions really paid off.
Although it was really good to see some of the improvements we are looking for they were not enough to beat Canberra. Our opponent have used very well their combination of good defending and fitness to perform many fast breaks and to keep an advantage built on the very beginning of the first half.
A 7-minute footage of the match showed 5 successful fast breaks executed by Canberra. This video strongly suggests what should be our next objective on the training sessions: to improve ball control in attack. In many situations the team got itself to a position where we had only one (or none in some cases) passing option what makes it much easier for an opponent to intercept the ball and to initiate a fast break. (Watch the video)
Canberra scored the first 4 goals of the game and although we could level up the match during the first half with their advantage oscillating from 3 to 7 goals we did not manage to take the lead at any point. The first half score was 11 x 17.
During the second half Canberra increased the margin to over 10 goals and also scored the last 4 goals taking the full-time score to 20 x 37.
Ricardo and Oliver were the top scorers for Five Dock with 6 goals each. Marc Dufraiche from Canberra was the top scorer of the match with 11 goals.

July 09th, 2011: Five Dock Handball Club didn't play well and was defeated by an "incomplete" Hills Heat 38 x 33. (click for more)
This was the first big upset for Five Dock HC in the Sydney Handball competition. Hills Heat played most of the match with only 5 players but a mixture of the absence of a proper goal keeper and an incredible high number of missed shots brought Five Dock down.
Psychologically speaking the team started with the feeling that the match would be easy and therefore no one would really need to put too much effort and this was certainly our biggest mistake.
Throughout the match Hills Heat used very well the lack of a proper goal keeper scoring from many non-favourable conditions. In addition to that we lacked incredibly in shooting precision especially from the wings what allowed Hills to concentrate their defence in the middle of the court. Those two points were enough for Hills Heat to level up the game on the first 25 minutes of the first half.
The match was defined during the last six minutes of the first half when Hills Heat quickly created an advantage of 8 goals while Five Dock was not able to score even once.
Five Dock improved a little bit on the second half lowering the difference to 3 goals on some instances but could go further to that and level up the score.
This was a disappointing match were our players were not able to show what they know and the overall performance was much lower than the previous matches.
On the good side this performance will help us to define what the top activities are for our training sessions. We will certainly need to increase the quality of our wing shots and also our defence skills.
Tom was again the top scorer for Five Dock HC with 9 goals.
Hills Heat got the match top scorer (Gilles Guillemin) with 12 goals. Ahmed Ayme (right back) and Ben Pellegrin (goal keeper - best of the match) also had wonderful performances.
July 02nd, 2011: Two new players debuted for Five Dock in the Round 12 against Harbourside. Five Dock was defeated in a close match 29 x 34. (click for more)
Five Dock showed a great evolution during this match. We had only two "native" back players but this was completely overcome by all players willing to play in any position as needed. Because of that we had many options during the match and this will certainly help our team throughout the competition.
Harbourside took the lead early in the match and the difference oscillated mainly from 3 to 5 goals. Harbourside managed to do not allow Five Dock to take the lead at any point what we really needed start controlling the match.

This was the first NSW Handball match for 2 players: Shaun Duffy and Leonardo Linares. Both of them played really well and showed that they will be really important in the upcoming rounds. To help developing the Australian Handball by having new players in the NSW Competition is one of the main objectives of Five Dock HC. Well done Shaun and Leo!
Ricardo was the Five Dock HC top scorer with 8 goals followed by Tom with 7 and Muli with 5. (The match report showed no goals for Tom but we all have seen he scoring many times! We've found out that the problem was that we gave the wrong number to the officials...)
June 25th, 2011: Five Dock HC played without key players and was defeated by Sydney Uni. (click for more)
Five Dock played without a proper goalkeeper (Jono was representing NSW in the U21 National competition) and subs (some players were travelling or working). Sydney Uni got the lead early in the match and the final score was 27x12.
The positive points for us were the debut of Tim Hang that did a good job on the right wing and Oliver that revealed himself as a great goalkeeper on the second half defending even fast breaks!
Tom got (again!) the "golden hand" trophy as the top scorer with 7 goals!
June 4th, 2011: The first win came in the second match for Five Dock HC! (click for more)
Five Dock managed to play as a team very early in the competition and led the match against UTS from the beginning to the end.
Jono our goalkeeper had a brilliant performance defending many difficult shots.
Tom was also outstanding with 9 goals. He got the "golden hand" trophy for the match as the top scorer!
May 28th, 2011: Five Dock Handball Club debuted in the NSW Handball Men's competition. Even though we were defeated, this was a very good start! (click for more)
Finally Five Dock debuted at the NSW competition. This was the first time that the team played together.
The good news is that the team showed lots of personality and even without a proper goal keeper could play a very good match and scored 30 times.
The defense showed some flaws that were expected for a first match and we end up losing by 43 to 30.
The most important fact of the match was the first ever Five Dock HC goal scored by Louwis Venter and - believe it or not - it was also his first goal on a formal match.
Good start for a team that will certainly help to grow the handball in Australia!
Highlights of the match:
• Everyone running 150% since we played with no subs! And we did better on the second half!
• Eduardo playing even though he was recovering from a cold!
• Louwis scoring the first ever 5 Dock goal!!
• Tom scoring 8 goals!!
• Luis and Louwis doing an exceptional (and brave) job at goal keeping.
